ABOUT ISM

Independent Study and Mentorship, or ISM, is an elective offered for Frisco ISD high school students interested in pursuing a certain topic related to a future career (class reaches up to 5.5 on a weighted GPA scale). The elective is an "exciting and rigorous" program designed for hardworking, high-achieving students who have a passion to learn from professionals in the workplace. To be accepted unto ISM, students must complete an application (encompasses requirements such as recommendations from all the student's teachers and an essay) and undergo a follow up interview process. After the applicants have been selected, students must conduct research and interviews-largely on their own-to find a mentor and gain the real-life experience the program offers. This elective includes analyzing research, having the capacities to come up with original, invigorating ideas, and the capability to handle hands-on experience in a "professional environment". Some of the life skills gained in ISM include professionalism, networking, and public speaking.
